John started work in an underground coal mine way back towards the beginning of the last century. He later managed the mine, then was called on by his colleagues to assist them to manage theirs. He credits his success to his fascination with "how adults learn". He has written two books, Making Learning Fun and Making Team Learning Fun. He has been a mines safety and health inspector, a mines rescue corpsman and a prolific conference speaker, but mostly a mentor, coach and what he calls a senior deputy assistant to those who make things happen. His qualifications and experience are mostly in underground coal mining, but he has also developed training materials for emergency services and railways. The materials have been used widely since he published Making Learning Fun in 1990.
