People who work at the coal face learn from experience. Because life is too short to have all of the experiences ourselves, this site is dedicated to learning from other people's experience. I develop and apply techniques for starting the learning process in the training room so that it is carried on back in the workplace.

There are lots of free resources available on my site. They have been developed over many years to suit particular needs. I share them freely and only ask that you use them ethically, which includes acknowledging me as the source.

If you like my style, but do not see exactly what you are looking for, then I am happy to develop something to suit your needs. Use the form on this page to contact me.

The materials fall into three overlapping subject areas: safety management, learning design and communication.

Safety is no accident

This starts with risk assessment, job design, employee induction, procedures and emergency management. I spent a large part of my career in underground coal mining, but the principles apply elsewhere too and I have also developed programs for fields as diverse as emergency services, call centres and railways.

Learning from experience

Many of the people who worked in the organisations where I was engaged had a vivid memory of the time they spent in classrooms. For many their most pleasant memory of a classroom was leaving it. My aim was to develop training programs that expanded what they already knew and correct any misunderstandings. My mission was making learning fun. Many of the activities that I developed are available for download.

You cannot not communicate

Some of the most influential teachers I have had did not realise I was their student. But I learned a great deal from them. In many cases it was what not to do. I have included a few communication techniques that I have picked up, and would love to hear what you think about them.
